If I were President, Executive Order #1 would require every American to visit India. (Sort of like a peacetime draft, without the fighting.) It's a stellar personal growth experience. It's a sensory bombardment... a wealth of new sights, sounds, smells, tastes. It's surreal, too... like you're in a dream. And backpacking it by train is the only way to go. India is so rich historically and culturally, you could spend a lifetime travelling there and barely scratch the surface. It tops any university class or PBS special by a landslide. Get your shots and your Lonely Planet guidebook. Bring your kids. Positively the single most awesome experience of my life.
